Letter from the Chair

Welcome to the website of the Association of Marist Schools of Australia. While there have been Marist Schools in Australia since 1872 our Association is relatively new, being formed only in 2000. The aim of the Association, as expressed in its Constitutions, is to "associate like-minded schools so that they may more effectively promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ through School education and the Marist way".

Marist schools exist in every State and Territory of the nation, and the Association represents a variety of schools - some have a very long tradition, others are relatively new; some are Primary schools, others Secondary; some are co-educational, others are all boy or all-girl; some have their origins in the Marist Brothers; others in the Marist Sisters or Marist Fathers. Our Association represents a diverse group of schools, and for this reason it is a rich and dynamic group to belong to.

Despite its many contemporary forms, the 'Marist way' has common origins: in the idealistic endeavours of a group of young nineteenth century Frenchmen, who believed that the Church desperately needed a new Society, a Marist Society. Their hope was that this new group, to comprise Religious and lay people, would fire people's hearts anew with the Gospel of Jesus. Like our Marist founders, today's Marist educators are called to lead young people to Jesus in the way of Mary.
